A DIFFERENT KIND OF JAPANESE PLATE
Japanese license plates feeling a little overplayed? Well, we've got something a little different for you!
Japan has a vehicle inspection system called "Shaken." When a car has an expired inspection or has not yet been registered, a special temporary plate can be used for approved journeys, such as taking it for inspection or registration. This is called a "Kari Number" (仮ナンバー). "Kari" means temporary.
A Kari Number is obtained through a local municipal office for an approved purpose and route, for only the time needed, up to five days. Its distinctive diagonal red stripe makes it easy to recognize.
RED STRIPE, JDM SPIRIT
A practical plate for inspection and registration also happens to have a look that car enthusiasts instantly recognize as Japanese. We took that familiar temporary-plate style and added our own Boso twist: playful numbers, Japanese wordplay, and a little rebellious character.
OUR BOSO VERSION
"Yoroshiku" is a casual form of "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu," one of Japan's most familiar expressions and one of the hardest to translate into a single English phrase. You might use it when introducing yourself, asking a favor, or hoping someone will treat you kindly.
Bosozoku often play with the sounds of words by writing them with fierce-looking kanji. 夜露死苦 is a famous way of writing "Yoroshiku," and the numbers 46-49 can be read as the same word. Spot a car or bike with a 46-49 plate, and you might have found a kindred spirit. haha!
